Tanzania outraged by irregularities in the registration of opposition candidates

Representatives of Tanzanian opposition parties stated that there had been widespread irregularities in the registration of opposition candidates for the general elections scheduled for October. This was reported by RFI Kiswahili with reference to the statement of the key opposition candidate Tundu Lissu. According to the opposition, dozens of candidates from his Party for Democracy and Progress (CHADEMA) both in parliament and in local administrations were disqualified for unfair reasons. We had 3,754 candidates for local councils we lost 30% of them, he said during a rally in Dar es Salaam, calling for peaceful demonstrations amid the inadmissibility of opposition candidates. Lissou also said that of the 244 candidates represented in parliament, 53 were disqualified, demanding that the election commission reinstate them. Lissu returned to Tanzania last month, after spending almost three years in Belgium on treatment after he was assassinated. Presidential and parliamentary elections in Tanzania are scheduled for October 28. Tanzania's opposition parties did not create a single coalition or alliance, which, according to Lissu, helped them gain more votes in the elections. Tanzanian President John Magufuli, who has ruled the country since 2015, will participate in the elections along with 14 opposition candidates. According to analysts, the disunity of the opposition is likely to ensure his re-election for a second term. Tanzania's other opposition party, the Alliance for Transparency and Change (ACT-Wazalendo), also condemned the election commission for not allowing most of their candidates. The Magufuli Party of the Revolutionary Party of Tanzania (CCM) has ruled the country since its independence in 1961. Having come to power in 2015, he promised to end corruption and develop the country's infrastructure. However, human rights groups and opposition politicians accuse him of suppressing media freedom and intimidating political opponents before the elections. However, the presidential administration denies these allegations.
