Borrel: The United States cannot use the procedure for returning anti-Iran sanctions

The head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrel, said that the United States did not have the right to use the mechanism for restoring sanctions against Iran in connection with the refusal of the Americans from the Joint Comprehensive Action Plan on the Iranian Nuclear Program (JCPOA). This is stated in a statement issued on August 20 by Borrel. The European diplomat said that he takes note of the US statement regarding the so-called UN sanctions restoration mechanism in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2231, but will continue to do everything possible to implement the JCPOA by all parties. According to Borrel, the JCPOA remains a key element of the global nuclear non-proliferation architecture, contributing to strengthening regional security. The United States unilaterally ceased to participate in the JCPOA on May 8, 2018 and subsequently did not participate in any activities related to the JCPOA. Therefore, the United States cannot be considered a state party to the JCPOA for the purpose of a possible revision of the sanctions provided for in the resolution, Borrel said in a statement. Recall that in accordance with the terms of the JCPOA, the procedure for returning sanctions against Iran in case of violation of the terms of the deal can be launched by any party to the agreement, which include the United States, Russia, China, Great Britain, France and Germany. The United States unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018. According to the news agency, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo filed documents with the UN Security Council on August 20 to launch the process of restoring sanctions against Iran. Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said that the US attempt to carry out resolutions on anti-Iranian sanctions will meet with opposition from Russia.
