France called on Egypt to improve the conditions of detention of activist Rami Shaat

France called on the Egyptian authorities to continue to release prisoners during the pandemic and again demanded to improve the conditions of detention of activist Rami Shaat, reports Le Figaro. Speaking to French parliamentarians, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said that the viability of Egyptian civil society is the best bulwark in the fight against terrorism and radicalization. In this context, we especially insist on the issue of arrests of human rights defenders, on the issue of the right to a fair trial for all, and especially on the conditions of detention in Egyptian prisons, the French Foreign Minister continued. The Egyptian authorities have already begun to release a number of detainees, today we publicly urge them to continue and expand this process, added Jean-Yves Le Drian. According to the information received, there are about 106,000 prisoners in Egypt, including 60,000 political prisoners, Islamist or liberal opponents. The human rights organization HRW said that in overcrowded Egyptian prisons, cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection have become more frequent. At least 14 deaths have been identified. The Egyptian authorities have released about 13,000 prisoners since February 2020, but this is not enough for HRW to solve the problem of prison overcrowding. Recall that political activist Rami Shaat, 48, was detained in Egypt in July 2019 and accused of inciting unrest against the state. His wife, Frenchwoman Celine Lebrand, was deported to Paris. According to her, her husband is held in a cell of 25 square meters with 18 other men. See also:
